Direct Action VANGUARD; Is this the Ultimate BUDGET Combat Uniform?

In the past 10 years, we have gone through a substantial number of combat uniforms. We started with budget airsoft brands and worked our way up to genuine Crye Precision uniforms, testing practically everything in between. We have even evaluated beta-phase samples to provide feedback to certain brands. With our unique insights into this industry and extensive experience, we are well beyond the average user in our knowledge.

Some time ago, we started using the Direct Action Vanguard Combat uniform, and this blog will be dedicated to our experience with it. We will cover the combat trousers, the combat shirt, and our personal findings on both. Throughout this review, we will also share some special insights we have gained from our experience in the tactical gear market.

But before we dig into this subject if you want quality gear and like our work, please support us by buying over our store!

Our Relationship with Direct Action

Our connection with Direct Action started years ago when we first used their products. Eventually, we became an official retailer, stocking their gear and offering made-to-order products when needed.

A few years back, we acquired the full Multicam Vanguard uniform for personal testing. Shortly after, we also obtained the RAL 7013 version (= Ranger Green) of their combat trousers.

As always, our goal is to provide an objective review until we reach our personal opinions section. There was no financial involvement in the making of this blog. We have used these uniforms in various scenarios, including technical courses, airsoft events, hiking in the mountains of Switzerland, range sessions, and even combat archery.

Combat Trousers Overview

Unlike most Direct Action products, these uniforms are manufactured in Vietnam, not Poland. This is just a point of information, not a concern.

Materials

The trousers are constructed using 50/50 NYCO ripstop fabric (50% nylon, 50% cotton), combining durability with comfort. This material falls under the "No Melt, No Drip" category, meaning it does not melt into the skin and slows flame propagation.

Other materials include:

  • 100% Polyester Mesh in some pocket linings.
  • 500D Cordura Reinforcements on the knees for high abrasion resistance.
  • Four-Way Elastic Softshell Fabric in key areas for enhanced flexibility.
  • YKK Zippers for reliability.
  • High-quality Hook-and-Loop (Velcro) closures.

The trousers are mainly single-stitched but feature reinforced stitching in high-stress areas. They also have a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating for water resistance. The Multicam version is NIR compliant, reducing detection with night vision devices.

Design and Features

  • Padded Waistband: Enhances comfort when wearing a belt.

  • Wide, Reinforced Belt Loops: Provides stability for heavy-duty belts.
  • Velcro Closure with Zippered Fly: A simple but effective design.
  • Elastic Panel Below the Belt Line: Improves flexibility when sitting or crouching.
  • Elastic Crotch and Inner Thighs: Extends to the knees for unrestricted movement.
  • Elastic Material Above the Knees: Allows flex when kneeling.

  • No Back Pockets: A choice likely made for comfort and practicality.

  • Deep Hip Pockets with Cordura-Reinforced Edges: Protects against wear from knives or multitools.

  • Zippered Front Pockets with Internal Organizer: Keeps items stable.
  • Velcro-Closed Cargo Pockets: Can be converted into an improvised dump pouch.

  • Cordura-Reinforced Knees with Insert Pockets: Compatible with Direct Action’s protective pad inserts.

  • Velcro Adjustment System on the Back of the Knees: Uses specialized Velcro that resists dirt and loosening.
  • Side Pockets for Tourniquets: A practical addition for carrying emergency medical gear.
  • Velcro Ankle Closures: Secure fit with strong retention.

Combat Shirt Overview

The shirt shares similar high-quality construction with the trousers.

Materials

  • 50/50 NYCO Ripstop for durability.
  • Polartec Power Dry FR Fabric: Fire-retardant, moisture-wicking, four-way stretch, and extremely comfortable.
  • 500D Cordura Reinforcements on the Elbows.
  • YKK Zippers and Polyester Mesh Linings.
  • DWR Coating and NIR Compliance for Multicam version.

Design and Features

  • Extended Rear Hem: Prevents the shirt from riding up.
  • Zippered Upper Arm Pockets with Mesh Linings.
  • Velcro Panels for Patches: Less aggressive loop fabric to reduce dirt buildup.
  • Internal Elbow Pad Pockets: Compatible with Direct Action’s protective pad inserts.
  • Velcro Wrist Cuffs: Secure and durable.

  • Raised Collar: Prevents sling abrasions.
  • Zippered Front Closure.
  • Main Body Made of FR Fabric: Covers the back of the neck and armpits, optimizing comfort under body armor.
  • Flat Seams in Key Areas: Reduces pressure points for extended wear.

Protective Pad Inserts

Direct Action’s knee and elbow pads are simple, affordable, and made of neoprene. They offer basic impact protection but lack breathability, leading to sweaty knees during prolonged use.

They don't offer the same level of protection as proper knee pads would, but are great for most applications that involve minor bumps and impacts.

Our Personal Findings

Pants

We have thoroughly tested these pants over the past few years and have grown to appreciate their balance of freedom of movement and minimalistic design. Unlike some overly complex designs that add weight without function, these trousers offer just the right amount of features without unnecessary bulk.

  • Lightweight: Weighing 600-700g with pads, compared to other brands that can reach 1.5kg.
  • Comfortable Fit: Slim, non-baggy look with great mobility.
  • Smart Pocket Design: Cargo pockets double as dump pouches.
  • Knee Pads: Functional, though not ideal for high-impact protection.
  • Durability: Some fraying on seams, but still holding strong.

Shirt

Switching from Crye Precision to the Vanguard Combat Shirt was an immediate improvement in moisture-wicking and comfort under body armor.

  • Polartec Fabric Performs Well.
  • Flat Seams Eliminate Pressure Points.
  • Neck Height Works Well with Slings.
  • Slightly Tight in the Armpits.
  • Cordura Elbow Reinforcements Are Useful.

  • Fraying on Patch Panels Needs Improvement.

Final Thoughts

The Direct Action Vanguard Combat Uniform delivers excellent value, comfort, and durability. The full set costs as much as some brands charge for trousers alone, making it a fantastic option for those seeking high-performance tactical gear at a fair price.

Although the product photos don't do them justice, these uniforms look much better in reality. Overall, Direct Action has done a phenomenal job, and we highly recommend them for those looking for a practical, well-designed combat uniform without unnecessary gimmicks.
